As the Seasons Change, Home Changes Too

When the seasons change, so does home

There is a moment every year when you realise that summer has quietly slipped away.

The evenings become shorter. The light changes. Windows that have been open through the summer begin to close, and the first heating goes on.

You hear the rain against the glass again.  The seasons change, and somehow, home changes with them.

Making home feel warm

As the temperature drops, a warm home becomes about more than simply turning up the heating.

Keeping rooms at a comfortable temperature, closing curtains when it gets dark and making sure doors and windows are properly closed can all help keep the warmth in.

Soft furnishings, rugs and throws can also make a room feel warmer and more inviting, sometimes it is as much about creating a feeling of warmth as the temperature itself.

If you are heading into the colder months, it is also a good time to check that your heating is working properly and report any issues early.

Keeping it comfortable

Autumn is when our homes become more important to our everyday routines.

We spend more time indoors, evenings become slower and those little comforts matter.

A favourite chair, a warm drink, a good book, soft cushions or a blanket can turn an ordinary room into somewhere you want to spend time.

Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

Letting your home breathe

When the weather gets colder, it is tempting to keep every window firmly closed.

But ventilation remains important.

Cooking, showering, drying clothes and simply living in a home all create moisture. Opening windows for short periods and using extractor fans when cooking or bathing helps remove that moisture and can reduce condensation.

Keep air vents clear and make sure extractor fans are working properly. If you notice persistent condensation, damp or mould, report it early rather than allowing it to become a bigger problem.

A home needs to be warm, but it also needs to breathe.

Bringing in the light

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes part of how a home feels.

Make the most of natural light during the day by keeping windows clear and opening curtains and blinds.

As evening arrives, consider using lamps rather than relying on one bright overhead light. A few warm pools of light can make a room feel calmer and more welcoming.  It’s amazing how different the same room can feel simply by changing the lighting.

Ready for the season ahead

The change of season is a good reminder that our homes need a little attention too.

Check the heating. Clear the vents. Use your extractor fans. Let rooms breathe. Bring in softer textures and warmer lighting.  And then settle in.  Because autumn has its own particular feeling.

The sound of rain against the windows. The glow of a lamp in the evening. The warmth of home when it is cold outside.

Different season. Different sounds. Different feeling.
Still home.
